I heard this story on NPR while driving to work this morning. I love the quote at the end:
An Australian mining town has a shortage of available women, so the mayor offered a solution: recruit ugly women to live there. He told a newspaper the city should attract "beauty-disadvantaged women." The mayor says his comments were "twisted" after women responded furiously. One local woman says local men are more numerous, but not so great. "We've got a saying," she said, "that the odds are good, but the goods are odd."
Jay stayed home from work today. Yes, that's right, the big tough guy who bitches if anyone takes a sick day...is home with a sty in his eye. Not "my whole eye is swelled up and I can't see properly" sty, but a slight inflammation below his left eye. I think he really wants to stay home and put up more blackberry jelly. There's currently 26 pints of the stuff sitting on the counter with another 4 large ziplock bags in the fridge to go through. The berries grow all around us (weeds) and the last few days of warm weather has plumped out the berries and made them really sweet. Bear loves to 'help' pic berries, meaning he's quite skilled and getting his snout into the vines and mooching of a berry with out getting stuck by a thorn. He been eyeing the apple tree intensely waiting for the fruit to drag the tree limbs low enough so he can score an apple. My little chow hound.
I took my Mom out to lunch yesterday for her (69th) birthday. We went to Geraldine's in Columbia City (local neighborhood in Seattle) Heads up locals - this part of town is really re-gentrifying and has some great restaurants as well as the farmers market on Tuesdays. I gave up trying to pick out birthday gifts for Mom years ago. She's one of those people who has everything she wants and or needs, (she's become a professional shopper since retiring) I can't pick out clothes for her and anything else I could think of to get her is just more clutter. Anyway - we browsed quite a few of galleries after lunch and she saw several things she'd like, I kept telling her to pick something out but she wouldn't bite. I'll have to work out Plan 'B'
Cousin Alice flies in tonight. I was hoping to take some time off work to spend the days with her but due to every ones vacation schedules that's not going to work out. My Mom is excited to sub for me and take her round town.
We've had electrical storms the past few nights. Saturday night/Sunday morning was the best. We typically just get flash lightning where the whole sky lights up but on Saturday/Sunday Bear woke me up as he hates storms and clued me into what was going on outside. I got up and watched as lightning bolts dance around the sky. Awesome. There was a bit last night and were suppose to get more today. The clouds are rolling in from the ocean so we'll wait and see.
Hope your Mondays going good.

Hi Brad!...will you please send me a bag of berries? I don't think we'll be having any berries here at all...ever. Sigh...
Those berries do sound delicious! All I have in my yard are avacados, plantains and citric fruits.
We're getting a little storm in, too, now that you mentioned clouds. Ours has a name and has the family staying in today (no school or work until Wednesday). Let's hope it's not a hurricane when it makes landfall.
Sounds nice, Brad. I like the "the goods are odd" quote, too. When not talking so much about war, NPR is good for me.
Writing today. LAST CHAPTER! Not done-done, but the content is huge, the pictures added will take time but at least I can do that whenever I can.
Be well, Brad. Happy Monday. Enjoy the storms...and send some our way--oh, wait...Fay is coming Friday.
You certainly sound perky today! Yum - blackberries. I hate the bushes, but I'm more than happy to pick the berries when the time comes. ;)
table = antique mall in tacoma on 74th. That place has some good stuff and it is huge!
Enjoy your day -
fiwa
OMG - I looooove blackberry jam. You are so lucky. If I had blackberry jam I would be as big as a barn because I would eat toast and jam for every meal. My Dad asked for a nose hair picker for his birthday...and he was serious but I am still laughing when I think of it. Of course I will get it for him but it's the funniest gift I think I'll have ever given.
Hope your mom has many many more birthdays Brad. You do sound rather frisky today....could it be the storm? The lightning has put a little spark in your get-along. LOL
Have a wonderful evening. The jelly sounds awesome...I don't believe I've ever had blackberries. If Jay has an honest to goodness STY...have him rub it with a 14k YELLOW gold ring (as often as he thinks of it). Something in the metal heals it. Maybe an old wives tale but it always seems to work...and costs nothing to try it. Hugs!
I was eating blackberries on my walk the other day. There are tons of them and they are so sweet!! You could send me some jam tho...lol...I don't know how to do that stuff. Would be good on my pancakes ;-)
I've been loving the storms the past few nights and even some this morning.
Take care and Brad....thanks so much for being such a great friend.
Happy birthday to your dear Mother. Thank her for me for giving birth to such a wonderful man.
I love black berries. LOVE THEM.
I hope Jay is feeling better tonight. Tell him I said HEY!
Sweet dreams.
I'm hoping this rain isn't ruining the last of the blackberries... the ones near my house were just getting perfect.
That storm last night was amazing! After such a muggy day it was great to have a break.
And you're right about Columbia City... that whole area is changing.
I love that "The goods are odd" quote.
Blackberry preserves sound heavenly. I've never tried pretting up preserves.
Your Bear sounds pretty smart to mooch berries without paying the price.
Blackberries yum!
Happy birthday to your mom.
Sending wishes for Jay to get better soon. Styes suck.
Our storms lately...reminds me of "home".
That's a lot going on my friend. Maybe you should take a sick day too.
At least Bear is eating fruit. :-)
Happy Birthday to your mom. I'm sure just spending the day with you is better than any present you could buy her.
I think it would be great to spend the day with my son on my birthday! :-)
I love thunder and lightening storms at night! The sky is awesome!
I agree..spending the day with your mom is a wonderful present. I usually treat with lunch and a movie for mine.
Now for the burning question...what do you do with all that jam? I bet it's delicious!
"...the goods are odd." Waahahahahaha
Ummmmm, blackberry jelly! I should go check the local woods for wild plums...that's one of my faves for jelly!
Ah, I forgot about the wild berries. We used to have a ton of them right by our house in Port orchard.Sometimes when my last husband got out of control
( alcoholic) I would throw his hooch right out in the middle of the berry brambles.
Then I would think to myself "if he goes in there to get that .....I am calling rehab!"
My family is all male ...hubby and 3 sons. I give them a detailed list of what I want for birthdays, Christmas etc...
It's win -win baby!
Hope I'm still doing it when I'm 69:)
Happy humpday
Monday was nuts around here....
But Tuesday was my friend and I think I could like Wednesday too. :)
sorry to hear about Jay's sty in his eye (although I always loved that saying!!)
A few years back my b-i-l got some funky growth on his outer ear--kinda like a sty but a sty on the ear didn't go as well as a sty on the eye, so I dubbed it "Ear-rectile Dysfunction" because the damn sty stuck looked like a lost limp pus of a thing.."
gawd, I hope you haven't had your bfast yet!
Elizabeth :)
