I'm really not a drama queen but sometimes you can't tell that from my blog.
Jay called me at the office from the house a little after 2:00 to tell me to come home. Someone broke into the house.
My first question was is Bear still there? Second question was is my computer still there? The answer to both was yes, they're fine. Whew! Anything else I can live with out.
Thank god Lolli had a lunch date with girlfriends in Tacoma or she would have been here. It could have been a lot worse if she'd had been here. Did we just get lucky ? Lolli's been staying with us the last couple of weeks and is here during the day. Were they casing the place or did we just get lucky ?
It's very isolated up here on our hill. I knew there was a good possibility for this to happen to us one day.
They kick in the (steel) back door. They did a hell of a job on the lower half of it. It won't even close now (Yeah! new door! I've wanted to replace that door since we moved in to the house! UPDATE: Jay's come home with a great 9 pane steel door with the little shade/blind thing built into the window --- Snoopy Dance!) I'd show you but I no longer have a camera, or an Ipod and other small electronics. But hey, they left the flat screen.
Weirdest thing is they made and ate a whole box of Hotpockets that have been in the freeze for god knows how long. I don't even know where they came from because I wouldn't buy or eat them.
The police response ws pretty impressive. As I was coming home I noticed three squad cars about 4 blocks down the main road. I smiled to myself thinking the police surely havn't arrived at the house, yet here they are blocks away. When I pulled up the drive I found that they we're already here and taking finger prints! Last time we were robbed in the old house about ten years ago they were like "oh that's too bad, call us if you have any more problems" By the way dusting for prints is a very messy process. I've got black powder all over the fridge microwave and counter tops.
The office here was trashed. Paperwork strewn all over the floor. Drawers over- turned and dumped out, papers, clothes & assorted debris everwhere. They passed up on so much but oddly they did opt to take a change jar that was one of those over sized Mason jars that stands about 2 feet tall and was mostly full of pennies. It probably weighed over 20 pounds as it was half full. I hope they get a hernia.
The place is trashed and Lolli and I are going to get started cleaning up. I'm glad I decided to come and blog this as it's help me put it into perspective and my heart isn't racing like it was before.
I need some advice though. Total losses that we've found so far probably total $800 to $1000. Does anyone have experience with reporting this kinda stuff on your home owners policy ? We've never filed a claim. Is it worth it? will they raise our rates? I'd appreciate hear your thoughts.
We're all OK. Well just have to keep on identy theft kinda stuff (any advice on that is welcome too) Bear seems fine but I know he must have been totally freaked out while it happened. He seems to understand that cops are the good guys because he sure was lovin on that dude. Good thing he liked dogs.

You are hysterical. You actually had me laughing about reading that you were robbed. I'm so glad that nobody was there and I've heard that black powder is the CURSE. I guess my first question would be what's your deductible? Anyone I know who has filed a claim has had their rates raised. You wanna wait for the mother burglary, the earthquake, the pipes blowing sewage through your house. I'd hold out.
That is so freaking weird!! They made and ATE HOT POCKETS?! What the hell? I'm so glad you are all ok and that Bear and Ms. Lilly are still there. You must have been so freaked out. Is there anything I can do? Let me know if there is, you know I gotcher back, love.
So sorry you had the break-in...but dude, what a story. I mean--HOT POCKETS and PENNIES. And they left the flat screen...too funny.
Let us know what happens with the reporting (or lack thereof) to your insurance co.--I, unfortunately, know nothing about that, but wish I could help you there.
Be well, Brad.
That sucks so bad! I had a friend who got robbed one time and the guys took all his clothes and all the food in fridge!
Thank God nobody was there though. I don't know about the insurance though. I doubt it would be worth it though.
How rude! How arrogant! I'd never be able to get into the mind of someone who'd think it's OK to break into someone else's home and take their stuff. I'm so glad Lolli was gone and Bear's OK. It could have been so much worse. Still, I'm sure you feel violated and you've got the mess to deal with now. Sorry babes.
Manstump...did you see anything? Oh right...no eyes.
It wasn't a happy day in your world. I'm so sorry. Feeling violated, as I'm sure you do, is such a dirty feeling. The office where I worked at one time was robbed and I never felt at ease there again.
I should know a lot about insurance because I pay for a lot of it, but I don't.
Clean up will be a pain but focus on the fact that everyone is safe and, while Bear isn't a watch dog, he is safe and there to give love.
OMG... I am so glad everyone is alright, especially Lolli and the animals. They seem really immature as far as criminals go what with the penny jar and hot pockets. Odd, don't you think?
You're in my prayers and I'm just glad everyone is safe.
I'm so sorry. I know exactly how you feel, it happened to me a few weeks before Christmas. The crazy thing that "my" robber did was put some cologne on.
My agent gave me this advice, "Don't file the claim." We had had one a few years ago for water damage and he said that they would surely cancel us for this and that no other insurance company would insure us and we would have to get insurance through the state which would probably be triple what we pay now. He said there is some BS about only filing a claim every five years. So,it might be best to save your claims for something really big, i.e. storm damage or an overflowing toilet that leaks down into the living room.
The black powder is a bitch. I'm still scrubbing it.
Love to you.
awww, i am so sorry, brad.
right when i read your blog, i had this weird feeling that it is someone from work.
i wish i had advice for you re: insurance. i have never had to file a claim.
OK, serious note here, yes we have been robbed and the insurance people were dreams. We had them come out and the only bump in the road was proving the broach my grandmother had left me was real pearls. We simply had three people who had seen it, write letters describing and within two weeks, we had our check for item replacement. I would encourage you to file if you have things you need to replace!
Oh, man. Sorry you're going through this, Brad. I'm so glad everyone is okay. I hope they get a hernia AND the runs from the Hot Pockets!
man, this totally sucks.. and really-- i know it does-- i have been robbed more times than i care to remember-- actually, so many--i bet i've forgotten a few!!
first of all, a really am glad that everyone is alright-- even the pets. everything else is just stuff.
as for the insurance-- honestly.. for that amount of money -it really isn't worth the stress, hassle, or trouble to file a claim.
it will mess up your insurance-- future rates .. even with future claims-- and one bit of advice many ppl don't know-- even if you call your co. for questions-- and mention a possible claim-- they will post a claim.. (maybe) on your record-- my company did-- because i asked questions!!!! ugh. never even claimed it.
anyhow-- your deductible is likely higher than your loss--or close to it-- so really-- just let it go.
my guess-- due to the items taken..and the stupid freezer burnt hot pockets-LOL.. it was prolly kids-- got any teens around where you live??
i'd start there..
good luck.
hope your weekend is better!!!
I am so glad that you and Jay and the pets are okay.
but they ate Hotpockets? How wierd! Must be street hockers because they could only take what they could carry.
I'm so sorry this happened to you!!
I hope they find them!!
Always,
Elizabeth
Oh, I am so sorry to hear that your house was broken into. How awful!!
Hot Pockets? - that is pretty weird!!!
Everything important is ok...and only the items replaceable taken..so in the midst of this there are things to be thankful for. The insurance thing is a real bitch, isn't it? You pay for premiums all this time and when it comes time to make a claim you're afraid to because they will raise your rates or HORRORS...cancel you...then you have to pay BIG BUCKS for insurance. I think they go by "3 claims in 3 years" type of thing for cancellations though. Yep, if what was taken or destroyed comes to less than $1,000...I wouldn't claim it at all.
However..please make sure the police have all your serial numbers....and the identify fraud thing...there is a company that protects you from identify theft...guaranteed...I just can't remember the name of it now. When I think of it (and I will)..I will email it to you. You can purchase it online. They will eat any losses up to a million if you become a victim of identify fraud.
I'm so sorry to hear about all this. There is going to be a whole lot more of it...as more people lose their jobs or jobs cannot be found and some have expensive habits, if you know what I mean.
A house alarm may be considered... or even a sign saying that you have one...sometimes that's a deterrent. What bothers me is that they came in with a big dog present....Brad, are you sure it waasn't perpetrated by someone that you (and also Bear) knows?
I'm just happy that no one was hurt...human as well as animal. Big hugs.
I'm so sorry I missed this, good hell, you have had quite a lot of drama going on...and this certainly is the worst kind.
It really pisses me off when someone thinks they can just TAKE my shit. Really. How freakin' rude of people...and yes, it has happened to me before, a LONG time ago, as well as happened to my son just recently...and seriously, it is such an invasion of EVERYTHING.
I feel for you, and again, I'm really sorry this happened. It sounds like in many ways you were lucky, though.
Chin up.
:)
omg, i'm just catching up here, this is a horrible thing to happen; i hope you and all are coping well. i don't think i could stand up to such a horror. good luck with the clearing up and thank goodness you all didn't lose more.
