Our little pocket farm could not be considered rural or suburban. It just happens to be the odd scrap of land left between two large municipally owned tracts of undeveloped land. In reality we are minutes from the freeway and 10 minutes from downtown.
After moving here it was natural for us to fall into the charm of the 'Back to the Land' lifestyle. First the chickens, more recently the goats. I found it amazing that you can order chicks online and have them shipped to you. They come in a perforated box a bit thicker than a pizza delivery box. Open and find 22-25 cheeping chicks. Contemplate that and imagine what kind of factory and system they have that can ship your selection by breed and have them to you when they're only one or two day's old. After two shipments only one chick failed to survive the journey.
Having used these web services, ordering supplies and products we've been added to a number of mailing lists. Most are geared for truly rural folks. I mostly ignore them.
However, when I received an offer to subscribe to this magazine I couldn't resist.
If you've not explored my sidebar and found Grit's Day on your own you really owe it to yourself to go have a read. A very gifted writer and a very funny woman.
This first edition arrived today. My only concern now is that Partner's been reading it and has now expressed a fondness Llamas and Alpacas.
Good Lord. What have I done ?

Llamas..(shiver) no thanks. Cute critters, but smelly! Ahh, the backwoods. I lived on a ranch. I personally loved piggies the most. The way the little babies nibble on your fingers and toes was so cute! But the moment I was tempted to start chewing tobaccy, I knew it was time to move on! ;)
I get Hobby Farm Magazine and the only thing that stops me from actually buying some land and becoming an Alpaca rancher is the up front costs.
Oh and all the work a hobby farm would be. Yeah, that too.
YES! You need Llamas!!!!!!
So I can come and sing the llama song to them!
fiwa ? Is Partner paying you for this ?
i want to come and live at your house. it looks much more fun than mine!
It sounds like you and partner have THE perfect place. Country lifestyle, city living. How lucky you are. And I have to agree with partner - llamas are awesome. Buy a few and name them all lloyd, for me, will you?
Have a good, GOOD day. :)
The balls are moving.
I'm going to dig out a picture I have of me and Princess when she was a baby, we're attempting to feed an alpaca (or something like it) and it spit on us. The look on our face is priceless.....
That said,I think you should add some buffelo to your hobby farm. That would rock....
No, but he might pay me to go away once he hears me sing the llama song. ;)

...llamallamaduck.
Llamas....they spit, right? If he insists. I'm sorry for the one dead chicken. Are the others for eggs? What's that mean the balls are moving? Is that something like a bully stick?
Since I live in suburbia where no farm animals abide, I don't quite get the why of having chicks and goats. Do you eat the chickens? You must have too many eggs? Drink goat milk? Have them around because you like to watch, feed and clean up after them? My wondering mind needs to know.
I'll check out Grits. We should have a post day where everyone lists their magazine subscriptions. You don't seem like the grit kind of guy to me. Just saying.
Thank you for your offer but I'm just not sure what I would do with balls if I had them. (evil grin)
Oh, I see the balls now. Gutter mind? Moi? In Spain I also picked up some salt and pepper shakers much like a hoppy toy I saw. I'm not quite sure whether to keep them yet.
My dad once ordered 100 chicks for our small farm and kept them in the laundry room with heat lamps shining on them. Oh my God, the smell! Put me off chicken for a loooong time. Llamas...might be fun?
